New Zealand Wanless-variants

Sailing from Auckland, New Zealand on 10 Feb 1941 on the SS Monterey, arriving at San Francisco,California on 24 Feb 1941, George Wanless, age 56, a groom, married, reads & writes English, last permanent residence Wellington, New Zealand, born in Middleton, Yorkshire, passport issued 24 Jan 1942 at Wellington. Stamped "exempt official" and handwritten note looks like "government official" and below it says "gratis", so I guess no fee was charged to him.
