Seamen’s Registers

Seamen’s Tickets registered in the UK

Great Britain & Scotland (and maybe Ireland) required registration of seamen in the merchant service and commercial mariners during the 1830s through 1850s. Many of these registers and “tickets” have been microfilmed by the LDS Church, and they can be a good substitute for the census when the sailors were at sea and never appeared on a census. Here are the Wanless/Wandless extracts. I do not know what most of the abbreviations mean – I assume “s” was “sailed”, followed by the ship’s name and destination. The dates are written “day.month.year” or just “day.month”. Some of the other numerical notations may involve pay or ticket renewals.

Seamen’s tickets from 1835 to 1844 are indexed by record series BT119/24, with Wan(d)less surnames on FHL 1483312, page 38. The index gives you the seaman’s name and his ticket number. The tickets are filed numerically in another record series, BT120/4 for Wan(d)less surnames 1835-1836, which is covered on FHL 1483222. In 1836 the records were restarted and the 2nd set, which overlaps the first, is on FHL 1502133, record series BT112/74 for Wan(d)less surnames. Because of the overlap of records, for some ticket numbers, there are 2 sets of information. The following are all indexed by FHL 1483312.
