Having joined in November 1897, he served in H.M.S. "Dido" and "Undine" and at the outbreak of war was posted to the Harwich Flotilla and later to the North Sea on patrol duties. He was afterwards engaged in the suppression of gun-running off the Irish Coast. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for devotion to duty and also holds the China Medal, the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service, Victory, and Long Service and Good Conduct Medals. He joined in Oct 1916 and proceeding to France in January of the following year served at Ypres, Nieuport, and the Somme. In Nov 1917 he was drafted to Italy, where he did good service at Montella and Mt. Grappa, returning to France for the Allied Retreat and Advance of 1918, notably at the Somme, and the fourth Battle of Ypres. He was awarded the Military Medal for his distinguished gallantry and devotion to duty at Menin, whilst acting as Brigade Runner under heavy machine-gun fire. After the Armistice, he was in Germany with the Army of Occupation until Nov 1919, when he returned home and was demobilised. He volunteered in June 1915 and in January 1916 was drafted to France where he was engaged on important transport duties at Armentieres, Ploegsteert Wood, the Somme, Albert, Soissons, Ypres, and other places until hostilities ended.
