    Notes
    • From Jan Hampson:
This information comes from a book over 100 years old on the Torrey family and is slightly confusing, but I'll try to make sense of it. Sarah Torrey married a man named M. L. Russell, and they had a several children, one of which was named Bertrand Russell, who was born on Sept. 13, 1863 in McDonough, Chenango County, New York. He married a woman named Isabelle Nicholson, who was born Jan 8, 1865 in Newcastle, England. They were married June 17, 1885 in Braidwood, Illinois. Isabelle's parents were Jane Wanless and Edward Nicholson. I have no further information on them.

Can't find her/their immigration in passenger lists at ancestry.com or castlegarden.org. Must immigrated after 1 Apr 1871 when they appeared on the Bishop Auckland census. Margaret's 1900 and 1910 US census entry says they immig. in 1873.

Possible marriages, but I checked all these in 1837online and there's no match to Edward Nicholson, unless it's spelled funny:
Wanless Jane Chester le Street 1852 Jun 10a 365
      Wandless Jane Durham 1852 Jun 10a 295
      Wanless Jane Gateshead 1854 Jun 10a 699
      Wandless Jane Auckland 1857 Jun 10a 206
      Wanless Jane Auckland 1858 Dec 10a 105
      Wanless Jane Auckland 1859 Jun 10a [417]
Gateshead is geographically closest to the children's birthplaces. Pelton & Perkinsville are in Chester le St Reg district.
Checked Jane Wan*s and Edward Nic*son at DUR Co. Council site; no marriage match. Site doesn't cover all of Durham. Tried Edward Nic*son 1851-61 at FreeBMD; no matches to Jane.
