    Notes
    • 1856: In Monroe Co, IA state census, age 23, b. VA, farmer, living with brother Wm in the household of sister Lurena & Benjamin Potts. See her entry.

Haven't seen 1870 census entry; from index: Upper Boulder Precinct, Jefferson Co, MT, p. 158

According to his diary (p.3), Ephraim traveled around quite a bit.
2 Oct 1854 to 22 Nov 1854 - journey from Virginia to Appanoose Co, Iowa
4 May 1857 to 21 June 1857 - journey to Kansas territory & back to Iowa
8 March 1860 to 20 March 1860 - journey to Syracuse, Missouri; stayed til April
17 April 1860 to 17 June 1860 - journey to Denver, CO; stayed til May 1865
24 May 1865 to 31 July 1865 - journey from Denver to Boulder Valley, Montana territory
12 Aug 1866 - left Boulder Valley for Fort Benton, Montana territory
6 Sept 1866 - left Fort Benton "with a fleet of Mackinaws for Omaha, Nebraska" and landed in Iconium, Appanoose Co, Iowa on 28 Oct 1866 and stayed there until 30 April 1867 (and got married on 14 April 1867)
30 April 1867 to 2 Sept 1867 - journey from Iowa to Denver and then to Boulder Valley; his diary (p.64) contains a list of the places they camped along the way, so his route can be traced. He'd been married 2 weeks when they started outl.
19 July 1882 to 31 July 1882 - journey from Boulder Valley to Ft. Benton
9 Aug 1882 to 25 Aug 1882 - journey from Ft. Benton, Montana to Bismarck, St. Paul, and finally to "Ace McCloud" in Iowa

A curious entry in his diary: "Mother departed this life 12 June 1852" -- not even close to the death dates of his mother (1883) or his wife's mother (1866), nor of his grandparents on either side, so we don't know who this refers to. Also, under this is:
      1881
      1852
      --------
      29 (17) Can 18 years.

--which is equally puzzling. Did he mean a relative died in 1881 who was born in 1852? And perhaps he'd known that person for 18 yrs, or it's a length of marriage, or...???
