    Notes
    • Margaret's maiden name is not known. Presumed by some to be Adams and to be the sister of prominent Virginian Thomas Adams, as he left land to her son Ralph in his will and helped her come to VA from England. Previous to marrying Ralph Wanless, she may have been married to someone named Wiley, or this may be a corruption of her possible name Wylam. The IGI contains no Adams-Wylam marriage in the right timeframe in Northumberland, Durham, Essex, or London.

Possible marriage: 1749 June 4, Ralph Wanlass and Margt Wylam, St Andrews Parish, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England.
--Note that Wylam is also a township in the Ovingham parish. John Gordon wrote: "I checked the transcripts of marriage licences but there was no record of one for this marriage. Therefore the marriage would be by Banns."

After death of husband Wanless and coming or returning to America, she married prominent landowner John Carlisle on the CalfPasture in Augusta Co (VA Genealogy). Marriage posted in VA Gazette 22 Nov 1783, so don't know actual marriage date except that it was earlier but probably not too much earlier. Augusta Co. Cths. does not have marriage records pre-1785.

Have copy of her will & estate disposition among children, and letter written by Richard Hylton to Thomas Adams re getting Margaret & her children from Newcastle (England) to America in the summer of 1772. Presumably she was a widow by that time. Husband Ralph probably died shortly before that time in Newcastle. Some of her children were apprenticed in Newcastle at that time.

Has been accepted into DAC (Daughters of American Colonists) on strength of Adams connection. (1990, Evelyn Huerd)

Extended suit of Clayton vs Carlile started 15 Dec 1821. Her children and grandchildren sued the estate of Robert (Little) Carlile, one of John's executors, for the amount due them from John Carlile's will and Margaret's will. Finally settled in 1829, with payments to Wm. Clayton [grandson), Stephen Wandless [grandson], and other Wandless heirs". Details in Robert (Little) Carlile's entry.

Letters of Margaret that were owned by Dr. Henry Wandless are not in the possession of the VA Historical Society and their whereabouts after his death are unknown.

1790 census doesn't list age brackets for females. No 1800 VA census.
