    Notes
    • "J. William, called Billy". Unmarried. [L. Craig]

1850: Age 24, in census as William with mother in Augusta Co (see father's entry).

1850 Augusta co slave schedule shows a John Clayton owning one 16-yr-old black male slave. He's in the right neighborhood, but can't tell if it's this John. The other John who is alive at this time usually goes by John A. Clayton.

1860: Age 37, listed as John W. with siblings and mother. See brother James's entry.

1859 Sept 22 : Thomas and J.W. Clayton attended a meeting held at Deerfield Church for the purpose of organizing a Bell/Everett club for the Deerfield Precinct. A Vigilance Committee for the precinct was created and J.W. Clayton and K. Craig were appointed to it. Many other precincts were creating or already had one of these clubs. John Bell and Edward Everett were the National party, pro-slavery candidates for Pres/Vice Pres against Lincoln and Hamlin. Democrats were generally for them. [Staunton Spectator online]
-- This is the only adult J.W. in the area at the time.
