- He was later cited in 1845 and 1849 (in his children's marriage records) as an "overman" and "overlooker". An overman, or oversman, was the person who, beneath the 'viewer', had the charge of the working of the colliery. He would set the pit to work each morning. By 1846 things had improved somewhat, his wages were now 26s (0p) to 28s (0p) per week with a house, garden and coals free. In later years the overman held a rank between that of a 'fireman' and the 'undermanager'. He would be responsible for a particular section of the work in a mine e.g. haulage, salvage or the production of several districts etc.

| Notes |
- Why we think this Robert is the s/o Robert & Mary instead of the previously-thought Thomas & Margaret:
1) His age at death matches the 1788 Lamesley christening to R & M
2) The death is believed to be him because it was at Colliery Row, which is where several of his children were born and where his wife lived 3 yrs after his death in the 1841 census.
3) The 1812 birth of his son Robert says the father is a native of Lamesley, which matches the 1788 christening.
4) All the data for the other Robert (s/o Thomas W & Margaret Towers) proved to fit him better than this Robert (see his entry).
Likely the Robert who witnessed his brother Wm's marriage in 1820 in Houghton-le-Spring.

Robert Wanless living in Colliery Row buried 21 Nov 1839 aged 51
-- age is right for a 1788 birth, and Alice appears to be a widow in the 1841 census
