    Notes
    • Called Hamilton, probably to distinguish him from his father. (Wife's 2nd marriage says she was the widow of Hamilton Wandless.)

Confederate Army records show that Stephen Hamilton Wandless died on Jan 5, 1862, of fever. He was a private in Capt. Morrison's Co., 58th Virginia Infantry, Co. G, CSA. Note that he is not the Wandless killed at Cedar Creek since he died 2 yrs before that battle. The war papers verified that he was in the Confederate Army and his Captain J. D. Morrison instructed an administrator to disburse some money owed to Stephen and for him to give it to his family as they were poor and in need. His widow got about $81. [Mom has these papers]

58th VA Infantry saw service in western Virginia during the winter and spring of 1861-62. Was known as Kerr's Ck Confederates aka Morrisons or Moores or Hattan's Co, primarily from Rockbridge Co. [58th Virginia Infantry, by Robert J. Driver, Jr.; http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/1850/58thvainf.html]

      CENSUS:
1850: Listed with father, age 10.
1860: Listed with father, as age 21. Mary Smith is 18 & a servant in their house.

1859 Jun 14: Bond of $400 by Stephen Wandless and Adam G. Cleek for Stephen's service as guardian of his infant son Stephen H. Wandless. [Bath Co Will Bk 6, p.262]
--Why would guardianship be necessary? His mother died 9 years earlier, which would have been the logical time file a guardian bond. Does this mean Stephen H. was due to inherit something from somebody else? He would be about 18 at this time.
