    Notes 
    • Minister of Methodist Episcopal and later Methodist Protestant church. Cleared considerable land in the 1820s. Adopted brother Stephen's 3 sons after Stephen was killed while shoeing a horse. Prospered financially and bought from James Sharp the property on upper Thorny Creek where John F. Wanless (nephew) lives (in 1901). Operated 2 mills in connection with his farming enterprises and prospered enough to accumulate a very respectable competency for the times. [Price]

      6 Sept 1836: Charles & Martha Grimes deeded 2 acres and 51 poles of land to James Wanlis, James Grimes, John Sharp, Henry Arbogast, John Waugh, and Charles & Martha Grimes, as trustees to build the Mt. Zion Methodist Episcopal Church, which still stands in 1981. [1981 Poca. Co. History, p.136, Mt Zion Church]

      May 1852: Some Wanless (first name not given) was elected a Justice for District 3 of Poca. Co., along with Hugh McGlaughlin, James T. Lockridge, and Wiliam Gammon. [1981 Poca. Co. History, p.24)
