    Notes
    • Named as a son in James's will.

7 Sept 1837 deed from Washington Gwinn & Margaret his wife of Augusta co to
Louis [spelled Lewis later in deed] Kincaid of Bath co; for $1,000; parcel of land on which said Gwinns now reside, whose description can be found in the deed of bargain & sale from Joseph Gwin & Mary his wife to James Gwin on 25 Dec 1'13 [sic] recorded in Augusta co; said parcel is on northwest side of the Great Calfpasture river adj. lands of Joseph Gwin Sr, Joseph Gwin (of Robert), and Jacob Beck, containing 190 acres more or less. [Augusta deed bk 9, p.65 - this bk is typed, so must be a transcription of the original]
-- this is the land left by James to Washington in James's 1835 will

Washington & his family moved to Carroll Co, Indiana between 1837 and 1840. Did his sisters Martha & Julia, who he was supposed to care for per his father's 1835 will, get married in Augusta, or die young, or come with him to Indiana?

      This web page:
      http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jennings/manuscript/beck.htm
says Margaret Beck d/o Daniel Beck & Elizabeth Summers married George Washington Gwin in Augusta co on Nov 06, 1830. This seems very likely to be Washington & his wife. as the Becks also married into the Black and Henderson families, and the Hendersons married other Gwins of Augusta...this page also says they moved to Wood co VA, but I can't find any record of them in the 1840-1870 Wood census. Augusta Will Bk 30, page 271 contains the record of Daniel Beck's estate settlement on 26 August 1850, which gave payment to, among others, Washington Gwin & wife, and Ralph Black & wife.

Both Washington and Margart are buried in the Sprinkle Cemetery in south-eastern part of Cass Co. Indiana. My wife, Rosemary Gilbert is a descendant of Washington. We have the listing of the family and many of the descendants if you would care for them. Two of there daughters, Margaret Ann and Betsey Jane married Gilbert brothers here in Howard Co. IN My wife descends from Betsey Jane and Henry Gilbert. Betsey Jane died Dec. 22, 1916 and is buried in the New London Friends Cemetery in New London, Howard Co. IN.. Margaret Ann died Oct 18, 1931 and is buried in the Paul Cemetery, Clinton Missouri.
Washington Gwin is listed in the census as Gwin, Guinn and Guin. They first moved to Carroll Co.IN and then to Howard Co. IN and possible Cass Co. IN. There is a possible chance that they may have lived in Iowa but just for a short time. We have information about Peter and Margaret along with several of there relatives moving to Iowa (date not known). They had taken Peter's mother with them and she died while they were living in Iowa. Not liking the area they returned to Indiana and settled in Howard and Cass Co. near where they had been living. We have only a few names of the ones in this party.
Washington Guin/Gwin died Feb. 11, 1868 and Margaret Beck Guin/Gwin died Sept 30, 1889 and both are buried in the Sprinkle Cemetery. This cemetery also has one other and possible another Guins buried within it.
      F.M. Guin. Nov / 21 / 1845 May / 22 / 1890
M.G. Guin (no date & not sure of last name.

Henry and Betsey Jane stayed in Howard Co and did not make the move. Peter and Margaret later to near Clinton Missouri. Margarets obit was listed in the Henry Co. MO. Web-site
I do have a picture of Margaret Ann Guin Gilbert, but none of Betsey. We do not as yet have a picture of Washington's monument but the cemetery is located about 8 miles north of our home and we plan to try to clean it and take photo's of it.
