    Notes
    • 1830 census: not in Tippecanoe co IN unless he's Joseph Olin, Wabash Twp, p.103.

1840 census: not in Tippecanoe co IN unless he's Joseph Golden in Randolph Twp. Not in Wood co VA. May be this Joseph Gwin in Augusta co near David, Samuel, and Joseph Jr, and Enos Swink:
      Joseph Gwin, 1 male 40-50
      1 female 50-60
1 female 16-20 [who is this?]
      1 male 10-15 [Hezekiah, abt 10]
      1 fem 10-15 [Margaret, abt 10]
      1 male 5-10 [Thomas, abt 8]
      1 male < 5 [John, abt 2]

13 Dec 1849, Wood co VA: Deed from Benjamin Willard, attorney for Charles Dunlop, executor of Thomas Gwin late of Augusta co, to Joseph Guin of Wood co, who is identified as a son in Thomas's will, for 225 acres in Wood co on Sam's Fork of Tygart Creek. [Deed Bk 15, p. 254]

      1850 VA, Wood Co, District 65, #1031
      Joseph Gwin/Givin 55 --all b.VA
      Nancy 58
      Hezekiah 20
      Thomas 18
      John 12
--appear to share farm with Tinder family. Family of Wm. R. Black is at #1029. Based on the fact that all the neighbors (of their sons) are the same as in 1870, I'd say this is the Tygart District. Plus we know they lived on Sam's Fork of Tygart Ck from land deeds.

1860 Wood Co VA (from Wes Cochran transcription - Joseph & Nancy have died and their children remained on the farm next to each other

Since Thomas claims to have b. Indiana, maybe this is Joseph (from BLM records online):
1831 Jan 3: Joseph Guin of Augusta Co, VA patented in Tippecanoe Co, Indiana:
80 acres (W half of NE qtr) in Sec 23 Twp 21-N Range 4-W, patent #12169
although it could easily be Joseph of Joseph & Mary Jane, since he made the other Tippe. patents on this date - but this one wasn't in his will, so either he sold it first or it was this Joseph...need to check Tippe. deeds to see if a wife sold this land with Joseph later.

It would appear that Joseph was only in Indiana from about 1831 through about 1832 and then returned to Virginia before 1838 - like other Gwins & Stephen Wandless did.
