    Notes
    • From "History of Coles County, Illinois", in the sketch on John W. Gwin: "The paternal grandfather of our subject, Robert Gwin by name, was a native of Virginia, where he remained during his childhood and youth, and where he was married to Miss Sarah Lockridge, also a native of Virginia. Their 8 children were Joseph, Andrew, Samuel, the only one surviving, Robert, Jane, Margaret, Molly, and William. His first wife died in middle life, and he was then married to Miss Betsey Mc Craig, of Virginia, who became the mother of six children namely Sarah, Renwick, Catherine, David, Blackburn and John. The youngest son and David are the only children living of this marriage. Grandfather died in Virginia in about 1840. His last wife survived him several years."

Father's will left Robert 260 acres near the Warm Springs bought of W. Guthrey, the place he now lives on adjoining James Stuart, and Negro child Eady; to Robert, John, Moses, and William Kinkead joint use of land on Calfpasture Mtn, 428 acres in Pendleton and Bath for use as stock farms.

Not found in Bath, Highland, Greenbrier, Pocahontas, Augusta in 1850 census.

Bath Co Will Book 5 -- I think this is this Robert because the witnesses William K., Moses, and John are all sons of Joseph who presumably live next door to Robert:
Will of Robert Gwin dated Oct 2, 1843, proved Feb 1844
Wit: John C. Marshall, John Gwin, Moses Gwin, William K. Gwin
Intro: "funeral to be conducted in a manner corresponding with my estate and situation in life"
Beq: land in Greenbrier and my share in the Lockridge place on the Big Calfpasture to be sold and the proceeds divided equally between my 1st wife's children and my dau. Margaret's daughter, namely Joseph, Jane, Andrew, Samuel, Polly, William, Robert, and Margaret. Land on Big Sandy and land on Shaw's Fork to be sold and proceeds equally divided between my 2nd wife's children, namely Sarah, Renix, David, Catherine, Blackburn, and John
-beloved wife Betsy - home place & all furnishing; at her death, to be divided between my children Sarah, Catherine, Blackburn, and John
-son Renix: roan filly, new saddle

(Shaw's Fork is a fork of the upper Cowpasture river in Highland Co, VA; it joins the main stem at Liberty, near the Augusta Co border. Gwin Mtn is just to the southeast, then Benson Run. There is a Big Sandy Run in Pocahontas Co on Cochran Ck near Rimel (which is pretty close to the Highland Co lands). There are also Big Sandy creeks or rivers in Kanawha Co east of Charleston, and in Wayne Co and Preston Co, and a Big Sandy River that flows thru present-day Kentucky near the WV border. I don't know which Big Sandy he owned land on.)

On Nov 2, 1847, in Augusta County, "the Lockridge farm" was sold to Thomas Clayton by Joseph Guin & Mary Jane his wife, Samuel Guin & Elizabeth his wife, and Margaret Guin of Augusta county, David Guin & Jane his wife of Wood county, and Andrew Guin & Polly Guin of Highland county. The Guins released their interest in "the undivided one fourteenth part of the Lockridge farm on the waters of the great Calf Pasture adjoining the lands of Thomas Mongomery, Samuel Blackburn, and others" for one dollar. Clerks statements filed in Highland co for "Mary" [Polly] Guin on 11 Dec 1848; in Wood co for David & Jane Guin, no date; in Augusta co for Joseph and Samuel Guin and their wives Mary Jane and Elizabeth on 10 Feb 1849; no acknowledgements filed for Andrew or Margaret.
--Note that Wm and Robert are missing from this sale, but they sold their shares later. Note that David & Jane Gwin in this sale is Robert's daughter Jane and her husband David Gwin. (Robert's son David Gwin didn't inherit a share of the Lockridge place, so this is not him with some other Jane.]

Nov 1849: William Guin "of Tipacanoe Co, Indiana" sold his one eighth share of the one fourteenth part of the Lockridge place to Thomas Clayton [get details from laptop].

June 1852: Robert J. Gwin of Gallia Co, Ohio sold his share of the Lockridge farm to Thomas Clayton (see his entry); the deed specifies that his share was inherited from his mother's share of the farm.

      1850 VA, Highland Co census, p.109 or 110, #586
Renick Gwin 33 b. Bath, no occupation listed, r.e. value: 100
Polly 38 b. Bath, as were rest of people except where noted
      Catharine 28
      William 15
      Morgan 12
      Charles R. 9
      Sarah J. 2 b. Highland
      Blackburn 23 b. Bath
--I believe Renick, Polly, Catharine, and Blackburn are the children of Robert, living on Robert's old place. Mother Betsy must've died or remarried. The younger children (see their entries) appear to be illegitimate children of Mary/Polly. This is 10 houses before Robert's brothers John, Moses, and Wm, who he is supposed to live near per his father's will. Also, James Stuart lives 2 farms away at #588; his land adjoined the land that Robert lived on, willed to Robert by Joseph.

Working backwards, it looks like Robert must've married his 2nd wife Betsy between Polly and Renick, that is between 1812 and 1817. And to have 7 or 8 kids before 1812, he must've first married before 1804. Which means he was probably born before 1784.

2nd marriage record: Robert Guin & Elizabeth McCray, 8 Feb 1816, Pendleton Co, VA. This is from a transcription; I need to see the original to see if "aig" looked like "ay" to the transcriber.

12 May 1845, recorded Nov 1860 - Joseph Gwin, executor of Robert Gwin, sold land to Benjamin Thompson - Robert had sold land to Thompson in 1840 on Cowardins Big Spring, a branch of Jacksons River in the Warm Springs Valley on the line of Thomas Adams dec'd and on the side of W.S. Mountain, being 260 acres that was devised to Robert by his father Joseph Gwin dec'd, and said land was never conveyed to Thompson. Joseph's statement filed in Augusta co. [Bath Co Deed Bk 12, p.175]

      -------------
I searched the KY land grants database at ancestry.com for "Big Sandy" and got lots of hits but no Guins of any spelling. There was a Robert Guinn who got land in Clinton Co KY in 1836, but the 1840 Clinton census (GenWeb) shows a Robert 20-30 with a couple of small children and other Gwinns nearby, so this is probably not him.

      Possibility for Robert's Greenbrier land:
30 July 1799, Robert Gwin, Greenbrier county - 30 acres on the waters of Pollie's Creek a branch of Greenbrier River adjoining the land of James Gwin & Bailey Wood; LOTW 12935 issued 13 July 1782. [Lib. of VA database, Grants 42, p. 485]
-- need to get grantor index to see when this land got sold and who sold it
