Orlena J. Smith, resident of Salem, Marion co, OR, aged forty one years, is the guardian of the minor children of John A. Dufield, deceased, who are Albert M. Dufield and Mariette Dufield. Their father, John A. Dufield, was a Private in Co K 38th Reg't Iowa Volunteers commanded by Capt. Allen, and he died on board transport from New Orleans to Rio Grande on 1 Nov 1863 from chronic diarrhea. The mother of the children has married again to James Smith on 2 Jan 1866 by Benjamin Cleaver a Justice of the Peace in Marion co. Albert M. Dufield was born 10 July 1851 and Mariette Dufield was born 7 July 1859. There is no public record of their births. The parents of the wards were married at Greenwood, Ill. on 9 Jan 1844 by William Vallet, preacher of the gospel and evidence is on file in case # 44,915, Orlena J. Dufield, claimant for widows pension. and she appoints R.E. Bishop of Dubuque, Iowa her attorney. Her post office address is Salem, Marion co, Origon. [she signed]
Also personally appeared M.A. Lake formerly Dufield, her married daughter, and F.A. Wanless, residents of Marion co, Origon, who witnessed her signature and say that as far as they know, her statements are true, derived from a long and intimate acquaintance with her.
The attached widows pension file, filed on 16 Feb 1864, says John died on the steamer Empire City, cause of death not stated, and Orlena J. Dufield's address is then Barr [Burr] Oak, Winneshiek co, Iowa. It also contains the marriage license in McHenry co IL for John A. Dufield & Orlina J. Bay, filed 8 Jan 1845, returned 8 Feb 1845 saying they married on 9 Jan. Also statements filed in Columbia co, Wisconsin by John M. Bay, Matilda Bay, and Samuel W. Bay of Randolph in that county to certify Orlena's respectability and entitlement to the pension, and that they were well acquainted with the late John Allen Dufield dec'd and Orlena Jane Dufield his wife, who were married by a M.E. pastor.
Daughter Matilda A. Lake resides in Abiqua Precinct in Marion co and is age 21. Her statement says Albert was born 10 July 1853, with some apparent writing-over of the '3', in Woodstock, McHenry co, IL, and Mariette was born in Burr Oak, Winneshiek co, IA, and she was present at their births.
The children got the pension of $8/month from 3 Jan 1866 to 8 July 1875, plus $2/month until the 16th birthday of each child.
Statement of Ann Dufield, resident of Ridgefield, McHenry co, IL, age 68, attesting to the birth of Albert in Greenwood, McHenry co, and William C. Battey of Hesper, Winneshiek co, IA, age 42, attested to the birth of Mariette.
Statement of Levi Freeman who served with John that says John contracted the diarrhea while doing his duty as a soldier at the siege of Vicksburg, Ohio around 21 July 1863. John was mustered into service about 14 Aug 1862.
Widow's pension app lists the following children:
