    • Born Anthony Jacques CHEEPER to Anthony Jacques Cheeper & Jane Bokenham. Listed as CHEEPER on son Harold's birth cert. Listed as Cheeper, commercial traveller, in father-in-law's probate (Sep 1877). Listed as Anthony Clarke, commercial traveller, on dau. Ethel's birth cert (1878), son Stanley's birth cert (1880), and 1881 census (where he is a publisher). Listed as Robert Clarke, commission agent, in 1891 census.
Have marriage cert of Anthony Jacques Cheeper (father Anthony dec'd), a merchant of Southwark, by licence to Catherine Ann SPILSBURY (clerk of Norwood) on 13 Oct 1858 , at St Lukes, Norwood,
Lambeth,Surrey. Anthony married Emma F TERRY (Mary's companion) in June 1882 (a month after Mary's death), stating he was a commercial traveller and his father was also Anthony, a Ribbon manufacturer. Anthony was with my ggrandmother Kate DAVIDGE at least by 1887 when Kate A. was born. [Anne Kratzmann]

I checked the 1871 census for the York address of the CHEEPER family, and guess what I discovered? Mary WANLESS was the governess to Anthony and Catherine CHEEPER's children at that time!!!! This is what I believed would be the case, so it is satisfying to have my premise proven.

So in 1873 in Kensington Mary had Harold CHEEPER who later became Harold CLARKE. I have his marriage certificate and his 1901 census entry.
Catherine had Alice Daisy in 1877 too in York.
In 1877 Mary had Ethel in Hendon and Catherine had Eva in Norfolk. So two households on the go!

Now I can't find Catherine on the 1881 census, or her 5 youngest children. However I have just found Catherine(Katherine) CHEEPER on the 1901 census as a patient at 4 Calais St, Lambeth! I haven't found her death, but given this info I will have to search again as I may have missed it.

Now is it possible that she went a little funny after this last birth and death of her infant, and was put in an establishment under care, causing her children to be fostered or adopted out, with subsequent name changes??? Surely they can't all have died by 1901?

I also found Anthony CLARKE's wife Emma F living with her 4 children in Gravesend, First child born in Sidcup, Kent in 1883 and her last child being born in 1889 in Lewisham, where my GGrandfather Anthony CLARE was in 1991 under the name of Robert. Another two households !! He had chn with my GGrandmother from early 1885 to 1901 at least. Emma died in 1906 so he couldn't have legally married my ggrandmother.

By 1910 he had run off with the maid Amy CLARK, and fathered (at 72) Donald Anthony CHEEPER!(so back to his real name) . This child died in 1911 in eccelsalls, York. Anthony Jacques CHEEPER died in 1918 in York, aged 81, apparently alone, which is ironical. I believe he fathered at least 30 children, with many I will never find, as they would be named after the mother. I have sent for a will search, and for the will of Joshua Paul WANLESS, for whom he was an executor.
