    Notes
    • First, the published flawed data:
From Morton's History of Highland Co (not complete nor entirely correct):
      ..... 2 Joseph Gwin d: 1817
      .......... 3 John Gwin
      ............ +Pickens
      .......... 3 Jehu Gwin
      .......... 3 Moses Gwin b: 1797 d: 1867
      ............ +Kinkaid
      ................ 4 William B. Gwin
      .................. +Rachel Gwin
      .......... 3 Mary Gwin
      ............ +Robert Lockridge
      .......... 3 William K. Gwin
      .......... 3 Elizabeth Gwin
      ............ +Andrew Kincaid
      .......... 3 Jane Gwin
      ............ +William Steuart

I have never seen evidence of Jehu's existence, nor primary evidence that John's wife was a Pickens. Several children are missing from this list.

"Early Western Augusta Pioneers" [more errors; p.96] says Joseph m. Mary Jane Kincaid and lived in Highland and Bath Cos. He served as 1st Lieut. in Capt. Hicklin's Co in the Rev. War. Of Joseph's children (note Cleek didn't list them all, even though he quoted the will, which is odd), Cleek says:
John m. Mary (Pickens) Callahan, widow of Wm. Callahan
Elizabeth m. Andrew Kincaid, son of Thomas Kincaid and Isabell Kincaid Kincaid, on Jan 17, 1812 in BathCo .
Jane m. John Law on Dec. 15, 1795 in Bath Co
      Virginia Gwin m. William Stuart

Chalkley, AUGUSTA COUNTY COURT RECORDS. ORDER BOOK No. XXIV., page 531
10th July, 1784 - Power of attorney by Elizabeth Kinkead to David Kinkead, of Fayette County, Virginia, to make a deed to Joseph Guin, of Augusta County.
-- Elizabeth may be the widow of Matthew Kinkead; see next few entries, although I don't know why her signature would be needed, as Matthew's will (Chalkley vol 3 p. 145) leaves land to David. David also had a sister named Elizabeth.

Aug 1784: Deed was delivered to David Kinkead for 230 acres on the great Calfpasture, "said Andrew's corner"; deed was made 20 Aug 1771 from John & Elizabeth Kinkead to their son Mathew Kinkead. Same to their son James Kinkead, corner to Andrew Kinkead's part of said tract. On same day, Mathew & Elizabeth Kinkead sold 174-1/2 acres (part of 334 acres in Beverley Manor on draft of Christian's Ck, corner Lewis's land) to his father John Kinkead. [Chalkley vol 3 p.513]

1784 Aug 17: David Kinkead to Joseph Guin, David's share of two tracts devised by Mathew Kinkead to his two sons, David and John, when they should arrive at 21 years. [Augusta DEED BOOK NO. 24. p.317 (Chalkley vol 3, page 570)]
-- so does this mean Joseph Guin got 115 acres (David's share)?

17 May 1785: Joseph Gwin bought 220 acres on the Calfpasture river in Augusta co from his father Robert Sr. (DB 24 P 83, copy from Mike Gwinn; sold this land in 1813)

22 May 1794: Joseph Gwin patented 120 acres on the Calfpasture in Augusta co, adj. James Fulton[?], Thomas Kinkead. [Grants 31, p.150; LVA, Gwin, card 45; sold this land in 1813]

22 May 1794: Joseph Gwin, Augusta co, 83 acres on the Cowpasture River and on the mountain and adjoining his home tract. [Ron Gwinn's database of Lib. of VA grants]

19 August 1794, Augusta co: Joseph Gwin, 122 acres; See Kincaid, William and Gwin,Joseph [Ron Gwinn's database of Lib. of VA grants; this land was sold by his executors in 1851]

9 July 1796, Greenbrier co: Joseph Gwin, 75 acres On the waters of Kellies Creek a branch of Greenbrier River adjoining the land of Bailey Wood,John Dixon, etc. [Ron Gwinn's database of Lib. of VA grants]
-- not sure which Joseph this is; need to see if the Greenbrier Gwins had a Joseph. Probably not this one, since this land wasn't mentioned in his will. But since his son Robert had land in Greenbrier, it's interesting.

8 April 1801, Bath co: Joseph Gwin, 28 acres, in the double of the Calfpasture Mountain on a head spring of Benstons Draft. [Ron Gwinn's database of Lib. of VA grants; note this land was mentioned in his will

SEPTEMBER, 1802 (H to Z). Hughart vs. Adams--Road appeal from Augusta. On 20th February, 1798, following inhabitants of ye Great Calf Pasture, petitioned to change the river road: Thomas Hughart, John Montgomery, Archibald Kinkead, James Gwinn, Jacob Peck, Thomas Kinkead, William Kinkead, Joseph Gwinn, Thomas Gwinn, James Fulton, William Moore, Samuel Black, Peter Simpson, William Yeuel, Samuel Neil, William Steele, Thomas Philips, Adam Hickle. [Chalkley vol 2, p.31]

Joseph Gwinn vs. Geo. Wm. Smith, of Richmond; Edwin B. Smith, of Bath, formerly of Staunton--O. S. 20; N. S. 7--Spa. 19th October, 1802, Augusta. George William Smith married a sister of Dr. John Adams. [Chalkley vol 2, p.65 - could be a different Joseph]

1809: Joseph Gwin patented 400 acres on the Calfpasture in Pendleton co, on the double of the Calfpasture Mountain on both sides of the County Line including the Wallow Hole. [Ron Gwinn's database of Lib. of VA grants; note this land was mentioned in his will]

This deed specifies that Joseph acquired the 220 acre parcel from "his father Robert Gwin". The 120 acre parcel is now adj. John Clayton, Thomas Kinkead, Gwin's old corner, Gwin's & Clayton's lines(see his entry) [Augusta deed bk 38, p.314]

25 Dec 1813: Joseph Gwin & Mary his wife, of Bath county, sold to James Gwinn of Augusta co, son of the said Joseph & Mary, the parcel of land where the said James now lives in Augusta co on the north side of the great Calfpasture river, adj. Andrew Peck, William Corbet, and Joseph Gwinn Jun'r, containing 191 acres more or less. [Augusta deed bk 38, p.316]

25 Dec 1813: Joseph Gwin & Mary his wife of Bath co sold to Joseph Gwin, son of said Joseph & Mary, ...[I don't actually have this deed, just the ref from Mike Gwinn and it's in the grantor index] [Augusta deed bk 38, p.318]
