    Notes
    • Not sure how John is a cousin of his wife yet. Dunlap says he was.

Came to St Louis Co with his uncle John McKnight in 1815. Was born in Augusta Co, VA. Died on his farm just west of Clayton in 1875. Went to St. Charles (then the capital of MO) in 1822 and became a clerk in the legislature. Read law and helped print the first revised status of MO. In the winter of 1826 he went to Santa Fe, NM and then to Chihuahua, to his uncle Robert McKnight in the mines of Mexico. In 1827 he became a merchant in Chihuahua. He lived there some 12 or 13 yrs, amassed a small fortune, befriended Mexico's governor Armijo. Returned to Clayton and bought 200-300 acres, married Martha McCutchan. His widow survived him for 25 yrs. (see her entry). [History of St Louis Co, p.37]

So John is not the son of John or Robert McKnight, which leaves Thomas and James as potential fathers for him.

1850 census entry (under wife) gives age of 50 and birthplace of VA.
