| Notes |
- Link to parents based on location (where Wm lived at marriage is abt 3 miles from where Robert's family lived, and a Wm of the right age & same profession (blacksmith) is shown with that family in the 1841 census, plus in 1861 Wm gives his birthplace as Colliery Row, where this family lived when he was growing up), and based on father Robert's profession being "overman" or "overlooker" as stated in siblings William's and Mark's & Robert's marriage records.
Passenger manifesto [in Colleen's file; arrival date & place were obtained from Robert's naturalization certificate] shows:
NY Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving in New York - M237 roll 251
16 May 1865
George A. Lewis master of the SS Virginia - passengers boarded at Liverpool and Queenstown - burthen weight 2416 tons
William Wanless 44 m lab. (all from England, all going to US)
Eliza 42 f wife
Robert Graham 17 m lab.
William " " 16 m lab.
Robert Wanless 14 m lab.
John " " 10 m child
Margaret " " 7 f child
Thomas " " 5 m child
Mike " " 21 m lab.
Margaret " " 18 f spinster
-- Is Eliza William's 2nd wife then? Are the Graham boys Eliza's brothers or sons from an earlier marriage or what? Who is Mike/Michael Wanless born abt 1844? Why are there 2 Margarets?
Based on the passenger manifest, other possible children of William include:
Mike/Michael/Mark b. abt 1844 -- not in 1851-61 census with Wm & Margaret & born before their marriage, so probably not their child
John b. abt 1855 - not on 1861 census with Wm & Margaret
Margaret b. abt 1858 - ditto
Thomas b. abt 1860 - ditto
--The oldest male is probably not William's son, but another relative.
Mike could be Wm's nephew Mark Wanless, s/o Robert W and Ann Spedding, b. 1845. He is with his parents in 1861 and married in West Rainton in 1873; is it possble he went to the US in between for awhile? And the younger children don't make sense - they're not shown in the 1861 census with Wm & Margaret, so are they Eliza's and actually have (or had before she married Wm) a different surname, perhaps Graham? Or are they adopted nephews & nieces of William? I'm leaving them linked to Margaret until we have an answer for this puzzle.
No marriage match turned up at DCC site or FreeBMD for Wm 1861-1865 to Eliza. I can't find a Robert & Wm Graham of the right age together in the 1861 Co. Durham census. However, in 1851 there is this family:
1851, Wheat Bottom, Crook & Billy Row, DUR
Joseph Graham, head, 29, blacksmith & innkeeper, DUR New Raby
Eliza C., wife, 28, DUR Willington
Betsy Graham, dau, 9, scholar, DUR Willington
Joseph, son, 7, DUR Willington
Robert, son, 3, DUR Byers Green
William, son, 2, DUR Brancepeth
Margaret, dau, 7 months, DUR Brancepeth
-- Note that Robert, Wm, and Margaret would be abt 18, 17, and 15 in 1865 - which matches pretty closely the ages for Robert & Wm, but Margaret Wanless (maybe she's a Graham) in the manifest is 18. Joseph would be abt 22 - could he be Mike?
Naturalization: declarations of intent, which usually contain more useful info, are not listed pre-1874 in LDS catalog. Might be on FHL 1255850, US Circuit Court, Illinois Southern District - this film covers Sangamon co and covers decs from 1856 onward. Perhaps also 1255854 Items 1-2, although this does not say it covers declarations, just "nat. records". IRAD said they couldn't find anything more on Wm (no further or prior nat. papers).

William Wanlass, of full age, bachelor, occupation: Smith, lives Charters haugh, father Robert Wanlass an overman. Margaret Hann, of full age, spinster, lives Charters haugh, father William Hann an engine man. Signed William Wanlass and Margaret (her mark) Hann. Witnesses: William Curry and John Burnish, parish clerk.
-- In this record, the residence looks like Chanters haugh, but no such place exsts. Charters Haugh is/was near Fatfield, about 3 miles from Colliery Row where William presumably grew up.
