Shingle Mill Strikers Pay High For Jobs
The shingle weavers at Ballard are on strike for the minimum union wage. The erection of a high stockade was yesterday begun around the Campbell mills, two of the largest plants in Ballard. Operators will import 300 strike-breakers and the mills, forced to close yesterday, will re-open. A Star reporter visited the strike headquarters in the Macabee temple, Ballard. Thirty strikers were lounging about the room, and here is a singular thing about those 30 men: not one had ten whole fingers and thumbs!
Secretary Paul Wanless is minus a finger on his right hand. Another man had but two fingers on his left. Two of the men had lost a hand each. "It's part of the trade," Wanless explained. "Everyone has to accept it sooner or later. But mangled hands aren't all. The machines cripple us, but the cedar dust kills us. It gives us consumption. Ask any doctor."
Wanless also said "There has been no disorder and there will be none on our side. We're going to win this strike by peaceful methods."
