      An Eastern Visitor - Oliver G. Wanless, of Cresco, Iowa, cashier at the First National Bank of that place, is in Salem visiting with his cousin Mrs. A.M. Clough and other relatives, among whom is a brother F.A. Wanless. Mr. Wanless is enjoying his first vacation in five years and is improving it by making a four week tour of the Pacific coast. He is highly pleased with the appearance of the country and especially the wonderful wealth of fruit, as shown by the healthy and flourishing orchards.

      Tombstone photo from K. Janke shows Frank, Lutisha, Printha, Polly & Simon Swarts, some DeSart (probably Mabel) and "Hattie Tanner" (Harriet Swarts Wanless Tanner) all buried in the same plot under one stone. Old Pioneer Cemetery (Salem?, OR).

      Obit says he came across the plains by ox team in 1865.

      Newspaper articles (Statesman Journal, Salem, OR - 20 Jun 1895) details Alonzo Swarts's trial for the murder of his son Edward; mentions "Frank Wanless, son-in-law of the murderer", but Alonzo would have been Frank's brother-in-law.

Frank eventually settled in western Oregon; Emile in Vancouver, Washington after stints in Oregon, Iowa, Missouri, and Alberta, Canada; Darinda (Holt) in Saskatchewan, Canada; Oliver in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Alonzo and Perry stayed in the Winneshiek & Howard counties area of Iowa. After caring for their father Leven Wanless in Cresco, Howard Co, Iowa until his death in 1901, Elizabeth (Damon) and her family moved to La Grande, Oregon. The only child missing from this photo is Eldridge, the oldest son, who was probably in Arizona.
