| Notes |
- The original creator of this tree, Doris Farley, originally had Thomas's parents as John Wandless & Jane Barron. However, we have seen no evidence to suggest that Jane Barron was in the Wallsend area. The 1851 census for her (married) family shows her born in Sedgefield, which corresponds to her christening record; she married at Sunderland, and all of her children as far as we know were born in the Monkwearmouth/Southwick area. She seems to be firmly cemented into the line of the Hartburn-area Wandlasses.
Then we thought that this Thomas was the son of John Wanless and Jane Rodison/Rogerson, baptized at Wallsend in 1813, but another candidate has come forward for that spot - another Thomas also born 1813 Wallsend, whose father is listed as John in his marriage to Ellen Scott in 1837. Plus he gives his children the middle name Simpson, which was Jane Rodison's first husband's name.
So...this Thomas, who must be connected to the line of George Wanless and Elizabeth Bateman (because he names his son Bateman) must be the son of another son of George & Elizabeth. Holly's favorite candidates for this Thomas's parents are Thomas Wanless and Alice Turnbull, in Ken & Colin's database - they had a son Thomas baptized in Wallsend in 1820 along with his sister. He could have been born in 1813 and baptized later when she was; this was fairly common, and there is no record of him dying young in Wallsend and no other info on what happened to him. Note the use of the name Christopher in this family, which corresponds to Alice Turnbull's father Christopher.
Note also that he baptised his first son Thomas on the same day in Newcastle St Nicholas as his presumed brother George baptised *his* son Thomas. I doubt this is coincidence - the baptisms are recorded right after each other, and neither man lived in St. Nicholas parish, so they must have agreed to meet there & do the baptisms at the same time.
