    Notes
    • No official records link Ann to Ralph as her father except for the land deal that says she's James' sister (see below). Price, in a Poca.Times article, also says she's a daughter of Ralph. Reuben Matheny's family history says he married Nancy Killingsworth without first divorcing Ann, but we have no proof of this, and Ann describes herself as the widow of Reuben. There are several Reuben Mathenys in this timeframe, which complicates matters.

Marriage listed in "History of Highland County", p.318, no date given.

      CENSUS:

This line has Elizabeth Matheny, age 58, female, a spinner. The name Elizabeth is crossed out and Annie is written in below it. On the next line, same house, is Elizabeth Saines (last name unclear), age 55, also a spinner. In the next house (#220/221) is this entry:
      Granville White 21
      Rebecca R. White 23
Thomas C. White 10 [ages of White family provided by Pat V's census lookup]
      John Matheny 62 farmer
      Annie Matheny 58 wife
      Sarah M. Matheny 17 domestic
      and in #222/223 is:
      James Matheny 32
      Sarah Matheny 28
and their children. Our Ann's son John W. and family are 4 pages away (pg 200 ln 32), son Stephen on pg 200 ln 10. Daughter Demy McCloud & family are at #216, just a few houses away.

Morton's History of Highland Co. says Reuben had a brother John who married Ann Wade; could these be the John & Annie above, so Ann is living near her brother-in-law? Also Reuben & John had sisters Rebecca & Sarah to name their daughters after. Descendant Pam Raley of Ann Wade & John M. say they are buried in Upshur and had a dau. Sarah Matilda.
