William Wanless was born in Penrith, Cumberland about 1815, apparently to William & Annas Wanless. He married Isabella Bell of Mindrum, Carham, Northumberland around 1835, and they moved to Bishop Middleham, Durham, where they had several daughters, and a son, William, born in 1844. They then lived at Marley Hill, Whickham, Durham from 1851 until at least 1881. Son William (b.1844) & his wife Elizabeth Brown married in 1865 in Gateshead, Durham and emigrated to Pictou, Nova Scotia, where William worked in the coal mines. Between 1869 and 1871, they moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, pursuing the coal mining industry. They raised a large family, with many descendants still living in the Springfield, Illinois area today.
