#12: Descendants of James Wanlass & Margaret Neilson

James Wanlass (1825-1895) of the Edinburgh area of Midlothian, Scotland, married Margaret Neilson of Tranent Parish, East Lothian, Scotland in 1845. Their resulting family immigrated to Salt Lake City, Utah in three groups: father James & 3 children in 1874, mother Margaret & their youngest son in 1876, and son James & his sister Christina in 1877 after young James had worked in the coal mines to make enough money to pay for everyone to make the trip. This database covers several of their descendant lines. The remaining children of James & Margaret lived & died in Scotland.

Family lore from several sources says father James's mother died in an accident when he was young and he was raised first in an orphanage and then by a family called Ramsey. James's parentage remains uncertain.

In this database, references to "the Church" refer to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, including church callings and ordinances. This religion was the main reason the Wanlass family emigrated to the USA.

We would love to hear from any descendants of the children who remained in Scotland: Elizabeth Wanlass & her husband William Wilson, and Margaret Wanlass & her husband James Stark. Please also email Alona if you have any further sources or verification of anything on this site (or additional items!).

Note: The Hunslet, Leeds, Yorkshire rumored connection to this family has been debunked! The Hunslet James is NOT this James! See James's notes for details.

Privacy Notice: With any large family, it is difficult to contact all the living descendants who might object to the inclusion of their name on this page. This database has been cleaned of dates for living people, but names are still present. Most name & date information is public record and if somebody really wanted to, they could dig up this information. That having been said, if you appear in this database and you want your name removed, just and you and your descendants will be removed shortly.
