About the Romeril file

FHL Film # 0564345 (births & some marriages transcribed by Alona Perkes; rest of the
marriages & most deaths transcribed by Holly Cochran.

In 1967, Christina H. Romeril sent her genealogy papers to Salt Lake City
to be filmed. She had tried for many years to determine the parents of James
Wanlass who married Margaret Neilson of Tranent, Haddington, Scotland. There
are a few notes in the papers signed "HMW", so we think she hired someone to
research for her at New Register House in Edinburgh, Scotland. This researcher
extracted all of the Wanlass (all spellings) births, deaths, and marriages found
in parish registers from the early 1800s onward, but we don't know if all parishes
were covered or just the ones likely to have James's parents in them (basically,
around Edinburgh & Dundee). There is a gap in births from 1822 through early 1856.

This transcription includes all the births found on this film and all of
the marriages and deaths through about the 1940s. Since there are now 2 or 3
layers of transcriptionists, for total accuracy, this should be treated as an
index to the parish records and you should consult the films of the
relevant parish records if you have any doubts about what you see here.

Notes from Holly: Location format is generally "parish name, county name", or
"parish name, town/city name, county name", using the old county names.
Haddingtonshire is now East Lothian. Forfar is Angus. Linlithgow is
West Lothian. T-Par means "this parish" or "of this parish" and "BTPar" means
"both of this parish". "law son" or "l son" means "lawful son" i.e. not illegitimate.
"spin" = spinster (unmarried woman) and "bach" = bachelor (unmarried man). "dau" or "dtr" means
"daughter".

Dear Brother:
A few years ago I sent my original Genealogical Research Work on the
Wanlass line down to your office so you could make Photostatic copies
which were to be placed in my folder.
I have been trying for many years to get a connecting link
between the Wanlass name as we spell it and the records I have
which spell their name Wanless or Wanliss, but apparently they
are not my blood relatives as my researcher cannot find any
connecting link with their line & ours.
I am in my 80"s and don't feel I can continue on with this work and
do justice to it, therefore I am sending you all of my originals if
they will be of any benifit to you in your work, to use as you see
fit or wherever they will do the most good.
I appreciate your co-operation and prompt and you have given me in
the past
